New restaurant review: Harbourside Grill, Harbour City, Hong Kong
A review of new grill-centric dishes with (surprise!) the best tarte tatin in town
Summer season is grill season, am I right? If you don’t feel like firing up your own grill, Harbourside Grill is now open and has one of the best (and largest) patios in town. It’s in the old Maze Grill spot (RIP) at one of the corners of Harbour City which means amazing views.
Harbourside Grill is helmed by Executive Chef Armand Sablon, a Brit who’s also a Roux Scholar and trained at the 2 Michelin-starred Auberge de l’Ill in Alsace as well as various hotels in London. His unique British/French style is clearly apparent in all the dishes. Here’s what we tucked into.
Yorkshire asparagus, Colman’s Mustard and shallot dressing, cured eggs ($138)
Seared scallop, crispy pork belly, curried cauliflower puree, capers, golden raisins ($218)
Steak tartare, grilled sourdough ($158, prepared tableside)
French beans, truffle aioli, watercress, parmesan ($138)
Sea bass, crushed potatoes, lobster bisque ($328)
Wet-aged Ribeye 350g, US Creekstone ($388), Wet-aged US Sirloin 300g, Snake River ($488), Lamb Rack 300g, Australia ($338), Jalapeno mashed potatoes ($78)
We loved the fresh, tartness of the vegetable-based dishes. And the homey yet inventive flavours in the sides. There are five different sauces for the grills (bearnaise, bordelaise, five-peppercorn, salsa verde and soy butter) and all were nice though the five-peppercorn was our table favourite - addictive and didn’t overpower the natural flavours of the meat.
As for dessert, we oohed and aahed when this glistening tarte tatin came out. They use Braeburn red apples from New Zealand (a good mix of sweet and tart) and serve it with a wonderfully tangy creme fraiche. We hear some couples order this and a bottle of wine to enjoy on the patio during golden hour. A great idea.
We always welcome a good grill restaurant. This one’s got lovely, approachable food along with great views and what might be the best tarte tatin in town. Expect this one to book up quickly, especially now that patio weather (for those that don’t mind a bit of heat and humidity…!) is here.
